Unfoldment

One of the many things which makes the study of Christian Science interesting is the way in which under its illumination the truths contained in the Bible are continually unfolding. The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is indeed a "Key to the Scriptures;" and it is wonderful how many of the familiar verses of Scripture take on a new meaning and application in the light which this Science throws upon them. Even in former years these familiar passages were loved and appreciated, and, though their meaning was but faintly discerned, in many instances one still clung to them with an instinctive feeling that they contained the truth which was so greatly needed and desired, with a pathetic sort of blind faith that some day one might understand and drink of the water of life freely, as Jesus promised.

In this generation, through the consecrated life-work of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures, lacking before, has been revealed to us. In Science and Health (p. 241) she writes, "Take away the spiritual signification of Scripture, and that compilation can do no more for mortals than can moonbeams to melt a river of ice." Through her revelation we are experiencing the joy and satisfaction of proving in our individual experience the power of the practical application of the truth contained in the familiar Bible passages whose meaning had previously escaped us.

It is a source of great relief and satisfaction to countless numbers of newcomers to Christian Science to find that, instead of being a new and startling religion, its teaching is based entirely on the same Bible they have always used but had not understood. Indeed, the first tenet of Christian Science, as given on page 497 of the textbook, reads, "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life." And it reveals God, who is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent good, as ever available under all circumstances for help and guidance in solving the problems which daily confront us.
