I had been a helpless invalid for two years and had come...
I had been a helpless invalid for two years and had come to think of myself as being hopeless. I was taken from home suffering from enteric fever, which later developed into typhoid, and for a period of five months lay hovering between life and death. My condition was such that the doctors stated it was an impossibility for me to recover. When I was sent home, I was a physical wreck. Shortly afterwards I was attacked by a terrible cough, for which all material remedies seemed of no avail, as it increased in violence. I spent ten months in a hospital and convalescent homes, but the cough kept returning with such force as to make my life a misery. My sufferings were so intense that I began to think of a way to escape by self-destruction.
Just at the time Christian Science was presented to me, the doctors had stated that I had no longer any right to remain at home. My condition was such that they said my rightful place was in isolation, and I was to prepare for an examination prior to my being sent to a sanitarium in a few weeks' time. During the previous week I had read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy almost night and day, and then attended a Christian Science service. To-day my heart is full of gratitude for the healing which soon followed. After that service several people came up to me, and during the conversation I made known my physical condition. Before I came away one lady very kindly offered to help me through the coming week, and I was to let her know the result of the medical examination at the end of the week. The report was so good at this examination that the doctor waived his decision. Up to then my diet had been milk and malted foods, with stimulants. I at once ceased any form of dieting and took my place at the table on the next day with the rest of the family; and from that time I ceased to be treated as an invalid. When I was examined three months later by the same doctor, his report was that the whole trouble had disappeared. I am most thankful to God that on this visit I did not need a doctor's report to convince me that I was well, because I already knew it.
I should like to state here that in all my experience with doctors and nurses, during this trying time, I received from them at all times only kindness; and I would grant them in return every good wish in the future. From the first week of Christian Science treatment I discarded all material remedies, and relied upon God. Since that time no material remedy of any description has entered our household. My wife very readily fell in with the proposal that we rely solely upon the great healing power of Truth to remove all discords. At times we have been beset with seeming difficulties, but through the application of Truth the evil has been silenced and harmony restored—sometimes with help lovingly given, at other times by holding steadfastly to the truth as we ourselves understood it.
