Some time ago I was suddenly struck down in the street by a runaway horse. I was unconscious for nearly a week; was afflicted with a fractured skull, and rendered quite unaware of the battle that was being waged by the surgeons who had moved me to a hospital while I was still unconscious and unable to protest. My beloved father, however, is a practitioner of Christian Science of many years' experience, and my mother's faith is as beautiful as her nature; so, of course, they used Christian Science in my behalf. The surgeon announced that cases of this sort never recover under six weeks, and very seldom then. In a week he was surprised; in ten days he was amazed; and in two weeks he gave up the case altogether, saying it was the most remarkable in his long experience, and that there was nothing further for him to do. Being a person of unusual breadth, he willingly placed the credit for what seemed to him a miracle where it belonged—at the door of Christian Science.
I feel that I have walked for some distance "through the valley of the shadow of death," but I feared no evil, because God was with me; and so words, however grateful, however fluent, are at best feeble attempts to make known to others the joy this has been to me.
