In the year 1912 I fell downstairs and broke my hip
In the year 1912 I fell downstairs and broke my hip. Intense suffering was experienced from wrong treatment; and later I had the advice of two of the best bone specialists in England. For three years I did not walk at all, but was pushed about in a bath chair. Then I used crutches for a long time; then two strong sticks; then, later, one.
In the early part of 1918, I began to read Christian Science literature, and it appealed to me at once. The pain began to be less and less; and courage revived, for I had thought I should always be an invalid. I kept on improving; but still I could not walk in the street without the cane to lean upon. In July, 1922, I met a practitioner and had treatment; and the treatment was continued absently. The practitioner told me to lean upon God, who was my support according to His own Word, as revealed in the Bible, and according to the teachings of Christian Science. I found I was gaining a clearer understanding of God as the loving heavenly Father, and of my relationship to Him. In August, 1922, I went out for the first time in eleven years without a material prop, depending upon the strength of Spirit, omnipotent Mind.
I am filled with gratitude and joy. I am walking finely, and growing strong in body and mind. It was said I should never be fit to perform any work again; but I do the entire work here in our flat. I can mount a stepladder, carry coal upstairs, cook meals, shop, and run our sewing machine. I am thankful to Mrs. Eddy for her discovery of this wonderful truth, and to the practitioners who patiently and lovingly helped me.—(Miss) Mary Holt, Troy, N. Y.
