Order

Most men agree with Pope that "order is Heaven's first law;" and some one else has said, "Order means light and peace, inward liberty and free command over one's self;" that "order is power." Where order is there is certainly the ability to express harmonious and right control; where order is lacking, confusion and loss of time and effort are invariably found. Order is all too lightly regarded, and its tremendous importance is not always fully recognized.

Right order may be said to be the very expression of law, and it always presents the beauty of symmetry and logical sequence. When properly understood and obeyed, it is seen to be governed by wisdom and intelligence. It is undoubtedly a quality of God, divine Mind; for who could imagine anything out of order in the kingdom of heaven? Indeed, disorder is ever the opposite of both harmony and good.

Now the so-called human will always resists the sense of order. Declaring that license is liberty, and seeing in the law of order only that which would check self-will, it claims that order is both restrictive and limiting in its tendency. Men in their constant endeavor to be free are ever looking in the wrong direction for that freedom. They imagine that to have their own way and to be able to indulge their own personal inclinations mean liberty. The truth is, however, that only as the human will is brought into subjection to the divine can real freedom be realized and enjoyed.
