According to a report which appeared in your paper, Dean Charles R. Brown, of Yale University, stated in his recent address that Christian Science is as businesslike and methodical as the Standard Oil Company. Kindly permit me to state that the purpose of Christian Science is not to commercialize religion. The Christian Science church has had a phenomenal growth. It is unfair, however, to criticize Christian Science merely from the standpoint of external appearances of success. The true standard of success for the Christian Science church is clearly stated by Mrs. Eddy on page 583 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she says: "The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick."
