The adherents of Christian Science, accepting the precepts...
News Dispatch
The adherents of Christian Science, accepting the precepts and practices of Christ Jesus as their guide, are to-day reproducing his divine theology, healing the sick and reforming the sinful by purely spiritual means. It will be recalled that there are the "signs following," the proofs positive of Christian discipleship, to which the Master referred when he said, "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; ... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Jesus invariably cited his healing works rather than his doctrine as proof of his divine authority, and distinctly commanded his followers to heal the sick as well as to preach the gospel. In view of this, Christian Scientists may be excused for pointing to the fruits of their healing ministry as evidence of its spiritual source and Christian character. It would seem that a certain type of religionist, failing to comprehend, or refusing to obey, the Master's command in respect to spiritual healing, delights in classifying the teachings of Christian Science on this subject under the head of religious delusions. Religionists of this class, however, should not be confused with, or accepted as reflecting the views of, those earnest and unselfish members of the Christian faith whose deep and conscientious love for God and their fellow-man has lifted their thought above religious prejudice. Such as these, impelled as they are by a devoted interest in the welfare of mankind, extend the hand of Christian fellowship to all who are sincerely striving to follow in the footsteps of the great Exemplar and thus to bring some measure of the Christ into human experience. Well might Christians say, as did Abram to Lot, "Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren."
