Christian Science came into my life between seven and...

Christian Science came into my life between seven and eight years ago; and I immediately began to get help through it out of difficult conditions. The first reading of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, brought me healing from all my bodily ills. Nervous restlessness, periods of extreme exhaustion, weariness, great depression, and much bitterness disappeared; also an abnormal growth, which I believed to be incurable. None of these troubles have returned. Since my healing, I have been gaining a clearer concept of God and man, and thus learning to understand how the reading of the textbook lifted my troubles so quickly. The growth of this understanding has been reflected in more harmonious conditions, and is enabling me to overcome error instead of submitting to it, or rebelling against it with bitterness.

In Psalms we read, "Let thy mercies come also unto me, O Lord, even thy salvation, according to thy word." I am learning daily, by study, experience, and demonstration, that the understanding of the last four words of that verse brings into life the mercies (blessings) and the salvation (protection from evil) of God; for all good and only good is according to the Word, or command, or law of God. The understanding that God is omnipotent enables me to think according to the Word of God; and in the degree that I keep this truth in my consciousness, in that same degree I receive mercies and salvation. The proofs of this truth in my own experience are too many to enumerate; but I would like to give one practical instance of the application of this law "according to thy word."

The law of supply may seem at times difficult to demonstrate; but I am learning that the rules for the utilization of this law "according to thy word" are: "My God shall supply all your need," and, "Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine;" but these rules must be applied with confidence. One winter, during the war, the supply of coal became difficult for those who had not obtained a quantity sufficient to last through the season. At that time I was requiring a ton a week, and buying as I needed it; and when an order was published allowing delivery of only one ton for each order, and orders were frequently delayed for ten days or two weeks, I found it necessary to keep orders placed with two or three different merchants. But even with this forethought, I one day came down to my last shoveful of coal. I had been to all the merchants with whom I had orders placed; and each had declared delivery was impossible for some time. On the morning of the day on which the last coal was put into the furnace, I left for business as usual, having declared the truth that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). When I returned, I found that, shortly after my departure, a neighbor had requested my housekeeper to take a ton, just delivered to him, as he had an oversupply. Surely this religion is practical, and wholly the expression of Love.
