In a recent issue a sermon was reported which claimed to be a comparison of Christian Science and spiritual healing. The clergyman was reported to have said that Christian Science was neither "scientific nor Christian." This statement has been used so often that it is threadbare and carries no weight. Christian Science is just what it claims to be and what its name implies. It is Christian because its teachings instruct those who accept it how to become Christlike in all their ways. It is scientific because it is a knowledge of Principle and of facts which are classified and made available in the application and demonstration of Truth. Mrs. Eddy in "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1) has defined Christian Science as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony."

While Christian Science does teach the unreality of matter with all its seeming attributes, qualities, and conditions, it does not deny that the phenomena relating to matter are quite real to the physical senses,—in short, just as real as the physical senses make them.

Christian Science is not a faith or mind cure, as the critic says, for the basis of Christian Science healing is that God is divine Mind, and it is the divine Mind, not the human mind, that heals. Our critic says that Science and health and the gospels are opposed to each other, when the fact is that "Science and health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, is based wholly on the words and works of Christ Jesus and his apostles as recorded in the gospels. Christ Jesus gave this test of discipleship, "By their fruits ye shall know them," and Christian Scientists are willing to be judged by their fruits.
