Portland (Ind.) Republican
Christian Science has come to the world at a time when mankind is hungering and thirsting after righteousness, and has brought a message of peace, harmony, and health that meets the world's need, unfolding and proving a full salvation from all phases of evil. It is based wholly and without qualification upon the Scriptures, and upon the teachings and demonstration of Christ Jesus. Its basis is the law of God, the same demonstrable truth that Christ Jesus taught and commanded that his followers teach and practice.
Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has said in her book, "Miscellaneous Writings," on page 252: "Christian Science is not only the acme of Science but the crown of Christianity. It is universal. It appeals to man as man; to the whole and not to a portion; to man physically, as well as spiritually, and to all mankind. It has one God. It demonstrates the divine Principle, rules and practice of the great healer and master of metaphysics, Jesus of Nazareth. It spiritualizes religion and restores its lost element, namely, healing the sick. It consecrates and inspires the teacher and preacher; it equips the doctor with safe and sure medicine; it encourages and empowers the business man and secures the success of honesty. It is the dear children's toy and strong tower; the wise man's spiritual dictonary; the poor man's money; yea, it is the pearl priceless whereof our Master said, if a man findeth, he goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth it."
The arbitrary statements that "Christianity is not scientific," and that "the author of Christian Science has written a lot of stuff and got away with it" prove nothing, and are but a repetition of a superficial criticism that has been voiced repeatedly by those who do not comprehend the fullness and accuracy of the power of God as revealed and demonstrated in Christian Science. Evidently this minister does not fully comprehend what his own statement means or he would realize that by it he has denied the power of God and of the teachings of Christ Jesus. If Christianity is not scientific, then the law of God is based wholly upon chance, and is subject to manipulation and changes. Christian Science teaches that Christianity is scientific because it is based upon an exact, demonstrable, and provable Principle that never fails. It teaches that Christ Jesus' works were no mere conjecture or manipulation, but were the outcome of accurate knowledge and understanding of that underlying and irrevocable law which is the basis of all being, and is capable of proof and demonstration right here and now.
