[Written for the Sentinel]

Truth's Revelation

Truth stood beside me, white and strong and clear
In the dim twilight, but I could not see;
Bound by the chains of discontent and fear,
I dared not move to claim such ecstasy.

Joy was unknown to me till that dull day
When Love removed the scales from off my eyes;
'Twas but a little thing—a sunbeam ray
Broke through the clouds and stilled an infant's cries.

I thought my burden great. The infant's care
On such slight shoulders, was it not as great to bear?
O coward heart, where is thy faith? I cried;
And there stood Truth, all radiant, at my side.
