The correspondent, "J. B.," in referring to the teaching...
Red Deer (Alberta) Advocate
The correspondent, "J. B.," in referring to the teaching of Christian Science in regard to prayer, makes some kindly remarks which are worthy of commendation. He is to be congratulated also for his recognition of the fact that efforts to denounce Mrs. Eddy are of no avail.
While Christian Science points out the importance of the physical healing wrought by Christ Jesus, it does not thereby "dethrone Christ from his high estate of Savior of mankind," as the critic asserts. It is evident that Christ Jesus himself regarded the healing of physical, mental, and moral ills as of great importance. The large portion of the gospel records devoted to his healing works during his three years' public ministry, is ample proof of this. One fact, however, which needs to be understood more clearly is that Christ Jesus healed disease by destroying sin, and it is thus that Christian Science heals. The physical healing in Jesus' time was one of the outward, visible signs of the fact that Christ is the Savior of mankind. The proof that the eternal and ever present Christ is still operating as the Savior of men to-day, is seen in the healing of physical, mental, and moral ills through Christ in Christian Science. In answer to the question: "Is healing the sick the whole of Science?" Mrs. Eddy writes in "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 2); "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science. It is only the bugle-call to thought and action, in the higher range of infinite goodness. The emphatic purpose of Christian Science is the healing of sin."
The critic writes, "Another inducement to become a convert is the easy, care free kind of existence one can have and yet be classed as a Christian." The teaching of Christian Science certainly brings much comfort to those who live in accordance with its demands. The rule stated by Christ Jesus is the rule Christian Scientists strive to follow: "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." Christian Science is teaching its followers how to do this rejoicingly, as Christ Jesus taught it should be done.
