Christian Science came to me when I was in need of...
Christian Science came to me when I was in need of help, mentally, morally, and physically. As a young man I used to spend time foolishly and in dissipation. I did not get very far in this kind of life but far enough to upset me mentally and to make me a nervous wreck, so that I felt sure I was going to die. A great sense of fear which I had had since childhood seemed to increase until I would not even go out on the street. I did not know anything about Christian Science, nor anything about God.
Then one day two years ago while I was waiting in a physician's office (having already tried three others who did me no good), a man recommended Christian Science to me, saying that his wife had been wonderfully healed. I told him I would try it if this doctor could not help me. The following week, therefore, having taken all the tonic the doctor gave me without getting better, I visited a Christian Science reading room. Upon entering I felt a sense of peace. The attendant was very kind, and gave me some literature which I read over and over again. A few days later I attended the Wednesday evening meeting and received help from the testimonies given. One of the members of the church lent me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, with the most perfect assurance that I could be helped by reading it, and I was. In Revelation we read, "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth." I surely was uplifted mentally into this new heaven and new earth. Science and Health is a book to be studied, I have learned, and not to be left alone on some shelf.
I am thankful to God and grateful to Mrs. Eddy and to the practitioners who helped me. I am also grateful for the reading room, for our church services, for membership in a branch church, and for The Christian Science Monitor.
