The Near Future

These are days when the world is mobilizing its resources to the last available unit; but, because "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (Science and Health, p. 468), all that can really be mobilized is right mental activity. Is the Church of Christ, Scientist, collectively, and are its members individually, mobilizing spiritual resources upon a basis that will enable them to stand in these "latter days," and to fulfill their responsibility to themselves and to all mankind?

In the Sentinel of September 1, in her article "Principle and Practice," our Leader speaks in words which should awaken the slumbering thought of Christian Scientists and transform them into real "sentinels of Zion's watchtowers" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 370). This latest message, preserved until the hour for its presentation, should startle thought and compel self-examination. Self-knowledge alone is the touchstone by which can be determined the question of whether those who have enlisted in the ranks of righteousness, progress, and Science are fulfilling their duty in reflecting the saving power of wisdom, Truth, and Love.

As Mrs. Eddy explains, the "faith-Scientist" observes only effects. He bases his daily existence and future expectations largely upon the transitory changing opinion of human belief shifted about by the winds of mental suggestion. His thought fluctuates between hopes "for a convenient peace" and of physical ease and material abundance on the one hand, and discord, dread, and fear in its many forms on the other.
