Like many others, I came into Christian Science when...
Like many others, I came into Christian Science when God found opportunity in my necessity. After years of prejudice against this teaching, based upon ignorance of its fundamentals, and after all material remedies had failed, I found myself in the position of a mariner in a stormy sea without sail or rudder and in a sinking ship. Divine Love, reflected by a friend, lifted me from my seeming peril and piloted me to the safe harbor of Christian Science. With a few treatments by a practitioner liver trouble of thirty-five years' standing entirely disappeared, and since that time, about six years ago, I have been healed of many ailments of throat and lungs, including bronchitis, acute lung trouble, and influenza. About two years ago, while away from home, I was instantaneously healed of a severe attack of pleurisy.
For thirty years I was an inveterate smoker, but this habit was entirely overcome by Christian Science over a year ago. My health was never better than it is today, and work has become a pleasure. My bonds are being loosed one by one, and I am daily enjoying that freedom which is promised to those who know the truth. For years I searched for the truth about God and man's relation to Him. I always knew there was a God, for I could see His reflection in my mother's face, but the God presented by dogmatic theology, oriental philosophy, theosophy, and so on, left me in hopeless despair. I knew that the God who created this universe, with its myriads of wonderful forms and colors, each playing its part in some divine plan, must be a God of infinite power, intelligence, and love, for, as the psalmist said, "the heavens declare the glory of God ; and the firmament showeth his handiwork."
I am very thankful to Jesus for making plain the truth about God and man, and for showing mankind how to work out their own salvation. I am also grateful that after his teachings had become obscured and perverted by materialism and dogmatism, a woman of the nineteenth century was so spiritually minded, so pure in thought, so brave, and so strong, that she could break down the barriers, dispel the mists of materialism, and reveal to the world primitive Christianity in all its original purity and power, thus enabling modern followers of Christ Jesus to heal the sick and save the sinning in the way taught and practiced by the Master. Through the understanding I have gained of the teachings of Christian Science life has taken on a new meaning, and I am striving daily to become more worthy.
