In the summer of 1908 I was led into Christian Science...
In the summer of 1908 I was led into Christian Science after eighteen months of suffering. For ten months I was unable to work, and as I had a wife and three small children to care for, things indeed looked discouraging. Christian Science was brought to my wife's attention by a neighbor, who although young in Science afterward explained it to us sufficiently to interest us in it, and gave us some copies of the Sentinel. These I read without my glasses, something I had been unable to do for several years, as my eyes were considered very weak. I have had no further need of the glasses, although I have read at night for hours.
Our neighbor had said that she would send an older Scientist to see me if I did not object, and accordingly in a few days this lady called, bringing Science and Health, which she left with me. With this Scientist's help I began to recover from a complication of ills diagnosed by six reputable physicians as spleen trouble, gall-stones, uric acid, stomach and bowel disorder, and anemia. An operation had been suggested for gall-stones by two of the physicians, so I went to see another one, who repudiated the former diagnoses; but in my case, as in all others healed in Christian Science, Christ, Truth, proved to be the great Physician, whose diagnosis is always correct. The tobacco habit was also overcome by the truth. Christian Science has been a wonderful help in our family, for through it my wife and children have been healed of various ills.
Before coming into Christian Science I did not have much use for the Bible, although raised in strict accord with the church, and a fear of reading it always possessed me; but since Christian Science was presented to me the Bible and Science and Health have been my daily companions. Class instruction has been one of my blessings, and to say I am grateful but lightly expresses my thankfulness to God, and my gratitude to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for being a willing channel for this truth which is daily leading mankind out of darkness into light. — Harley R. Gebhart, Franklin, Ohio.
