Urbana (Ohio) Citizen
Our critic says that to declare God is all "makes God responsible for all, every sin and devil—every sin and sinner—that disgraces God." In Christian Science it would be an utter impossibility for God, infinite good, to be responsible for "every sin and devil—every sin and sinner—that disgraces God." If God is omnipotent, how can there be any room or place for any other power? Can there be more than omnipotence?
Christian Science accepts Jesus' definition of Deity,—"God is a Spirit." The marginal reading of the American Standard Version is, "God is spirit." Christian Science also accepts John's statement, "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." If God is Spirit and everything was made by Spirit, nothing that God made could be unlike the nature and quality of the divine Mind; therefore His creation must be spiritual and not material. In Genesis we read: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness ... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." To the five material senses creation appears material. To these same senses the sun seems to rise in the east and set in the west. As the science of astronomy disputes this testimony, so the Science of Christianity, or Christian Science, teaches us that the spiritual and not the material is the reality of existence, despite all the evidence of the five material senses to the contrary.
Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." Paul wrote, "While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." Christian Scientists are aware that there is a claim of sin and disease in the world, but they do deny that God, Spirit, is responsible for it. In the ratio that we understand God's all-power, we are able to prove the unreality and falsity of any other god or power beside the one great "I am," the true and living God. Christian Science teaching is in strict accord with Jesus' command, "Have faith in God." Faith in the devil, or belief in evil, can never save mankind, but to understand God's omnipotence as taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus will save the world from both sin and sickness.
