Listening and Rejoicing

All through the Scriptures we find admonitions about listening for the divine voice. The Hebrew people were all familiar with the command, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord;" and this runs as a refrain all through the Scriptures. On many occasions Christ Jesus rebuked those who gathered about him, because they did not listen and hear the voice of Truth, and so missed their way. On the other hand, we are told of others to whom the voice of God came as the sound of a trumpet or as the sound of many waters; but the one important thing for us all to know is, that all may hear the divine voice if only they desire this above all else and are willing to obey.

Strangely enough, the belief is widely prevalent today that God does not speak to humanity as He did in the olden time, and that for this reason we must not expect to see evidences of the divine ever-presence such as those which are recorded in the Scriptures,—a mistaken belief which Christian Science is replacing by actual demonstrations of the ever-presence and all-power of divine Truth and Love. One of the most inspiring passages in all of Mrs. Eddy's writings is to be found in the familiar hymn so dear to all Christian Scientists (Hymnal, p. 237), where we find these lines:—
