I did not come into Christian Science because of any need...
I did not come into Christian Science because of any need of physical healing, but when in November, 1914, my wife was healed through its ministrations of a complication of diseases of long standing, I knew it was the truth. She had never been strong or healthy, but her greatest trouble, a nervous breakdown, dated back seven years, when our last child was born, a condition being left which we were told could be removed only by a surgical operation.
In the early summer of 1914 the trouble became more serious than ever and resulted in a complete collapse. At the end of five weeks, however, on the advice of the attending physician, I took my wife on a trip, the nurse going with us. We were gone three months, and most of this time, when we were not traveling, my wife spent in bed, all the while being under the care of the physician and taking his medicine, even after our return home in September. About the middle of October I returned from a business trip to find that she was worse than ever.
At this juncture a neighbor who is a Scientist brought over a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, at the same time telling my wife what Christian Science had done for her and for her family for some eighteen years. After reading the book for a week, with the prayerful desire that if the good was there she might find it, my wife was benefited so much that she went to see a practitioner. Two days afterward she talked with the practitioner over the telephone and work was taken up for a bowel disorder of lifelong standing. In two days more this had disappeared never to return. Since then the spinal trouble, which prevented the free use of her arms, has been overcome in proportion as the truth has come into her consciousness. At the end of a year my wife took up the household duties. Words cannot express the gratitude that filled every member of our household at this wonderful demonstration of the healing power of Christ, Truth.
