It is not the desire or the practice of Christian Scientists...

Lower Columbian

It is not the desire or the practice of Christian Scientists to engage in religious controversies of any sort, and we quite freely accord to "Observer" the right to think as he chooses regarding the Christian Science lecturer's illustrations and explanations to which he takes exception.

It is quite true that in belief the human mind controls the body and governs its feelings and action. This fact, however, in no way disproves the statement that God is the basis of the healing method of Christian Science, nor does it prove that God is the basis of those systems which rely wholly or in part upon matter for healing. On page 162 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says that "the effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind." In Christian Science treatments neither the human mind nor any form of matter is relied upon for healing. God, and God alone, is recognized therein as the healer of all diseases.

"Observer" asks just what is meant in Christian Science by "real" when it is affirmed that matter has no real existence. Christian Science teaches that God is the only cause and creator, and that in accord with the Scriptures He is Spirit. His creation, therefore, being like Him, must be spiritual, and not material. God's creation, Christian Science teaches, is the only real creation, because it is an expression of infinity, of divine Principle, besides whom there can be none else. That which appears to the finite senses as matter, together with all its accompaniments, not being created by God, Spirit, can only be temporary,—experiences of the carnal or mortal mind, which must ultimately disappear. Paul says, "The things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal."
