The Providence (R. I.) Journal

It was with some little surprise and not altogether without amusement that I read the article entitled "Christian Science in Japan." This article was copied from the Watchman-Examiner, and from its title one would naturally expect to find an exposition of the progress of Christian Science in Japan. On the contrary, the statement is made that "Tenrikyo in Japan corresponds to Christian Science in America." Then to substantiate this claim the would-be informant goes on to say, "Physical healing is a part of the belief, but not so much emphasis is laid upon it as is done by Christian Science; the special purpose of Tenrikyo being moral rather than physical."

Christian Science is not in any way allied with any sect or belief, but stands firmly upon the teachings of Jesus alone. No special emphasis is laid upon the physical healing other than that such is the fruit or proof of an understanding of divine law as exemplified by Christ Jesus. To prove that one is a true follower of the Christ, one must begin to produce the results of that discipleship. As Jesus says, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."

The article further states that "like Mrs. Eddy, Mrs. Nakayama claimed to be the special representative of God." Mrs. Eddy never claimed any such position. What she did claim for herself was that she was the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and "a willing disciple at the heavenly gate, waiting for the Mind of Christ," as we may read on page ix of the Preface to the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
