For over four years I suffered from chronic stomach trouble, and eventually was taken so ill that a doctor was called in. Though he put me on a diet, prescribed medicine, and ordered me to rest, I got no better under this treatment, but on the contrary became much worse. A second doctor diagnosed the case as appendicitis and urgently advised an operation. A consultation was held with another medical man, who confirmed this advice and also said I had a gastric ulcer. He agreed that an immediate operation should take place. As I would not consent to go through the ordeal, they advised a change of diet and ordered complete rest. I continued to get worse, however, and was by this time very thin and weak.

We then called in a specialist, who stated that the bowels were displaced, due to starvation and inability to digest food. He ordered me to use an electric battery, and again entirely changed my diet. I was allowed to eat very little; indeed, was fasting most of the time and took more medicine than food. There was always more or less pain, often intense. At first I gained a little under this treatment, but the improvement did not last, for I fell back and was again losing weight. The doctor was at a loss to know what to do with me. Neuralgia also caused me considerable suffering, and abscesses came out on different parts of my body; indeed, I seemed a hopeless wreck. About this time a sister-in-law in England wrote me that I could be healed through Christian Science, and sent the address of a practitioner here. I knew nothing whatever about Christian Science, but decided to try it. I went to the practitioner, who advised me to read Science and Health, saying that just the reading of this book healed some people; but I failed to understand it at first, being in pain and impatient, so asked for treatment. On the fourth day I had a most wonderful experience; the spiritual uplift was beautiful, and my healing was instantaneous. The disease, and every other trouble, vanished like a dream. I have eaten everything I wanted from that day, and have grown quite fleshy. Since gaining some understanding of Science and Health I have treated my husband and little boy with success.

I can read the Bible and understand it now, something I never did before. I feel a deep love for Science and Health, also for our dear Leader, and am so thankful to know God at last, for we had long ago given up what is generally called orthodox religion.
