Unfoldment

In Christian Science a correct understanding of the truth must antedate any satisfactory demonstration of it. We have this truth only in the proportion that we prove it. The human consciousness which is sufficiently awake to good to protect itself from evil suggestion, is unfolding to God, good, every day and hour. Why? Because it is embodying spiritual ideas, an infinitude of which are ever present and always available. Conversely, this spiritual activity neutralizes and eliminates the arguments and suggestions of sinful sense, and so escapes "the corruption that is in the world through lust,"—the belief of mind in matter.

What a great difference there is between the two! To mortal sense there are two kinds of masters. The one, false thinking, based upon personal sense, leads us into bondage; the other, spiritual reflection (right thinking), based upon Principle and law and rightly directed, sets us free. As the Master declared, "If the Son ... shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." It is pitiful to consider the bondage which human sense endures because of its false beliefs. It sees no way out, because it perceives not the truth of being. It has no individuality, but is simply an ignorant participant in the universal illusion of life in matter.

Now the moment human consciousness is awakened to the demands of Truth, it begins to be spiritualized, becoming in a degree active, patient, loving, and pure, and is on the way to perfection. It sees that there is but one attraction, divine Love, although there seem to be many counterfeits. It becomes wiser, because it begins to reflect the one wisdom. It becomes humble, because it embodies the idea of humility and knows there is nothing in mortal mind to be proud of. It becomes pure, because the idea of purity is being individualized and thereby the Principle of purtiy is discerned. Above all it becomes loving, because thought has so risen above the limited and personal sense of love that the desire is to help and heal, and thus to bless mankind in the one affection. In short, the old things of personal sense are passing away, and all things are becoming new.
