The absence from Christian churches of the works which Christ Jesus promised should be done by all who believed on him, understood his teachings, is clear evidence of the need of a spiritual key to the Scriptures, such as has been furnished the world by Mrs. Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." The study of this book has opened the spiritual treasures of the Bible to many thousands, and has so illumined its sacred pages that the divine Principle of the Master's teaching and practice has been revealed, and God's law of harmony, health and happines, has been proven to be as available now as it was nineteen hundred years ago.

Christian Scientists do not claim to have "preempted certain portions of Christianity" nor to "hold letters patent" on Christian healing. That would be something like trying to preempt certain portions of sunlight or to take letters patent on the multiplication table and its use. In her book "Unity of Good" Mrs. Eddy says, "If there be any monopoly in my teaching, it lies in this utter reliance upon the one God, to whom belong all things" (p. 10).

Christian Science proves that the promises of Christ Jesus are capable of fulfillment now to all who will comply with the conditions attached to them. He overcame sin, ill health, and death by his understanding of the ever presence and omnipotence of God, good, and the consequent unreality and impotence of evil. This is the divine basis of Christian Science which enables its adherents to repeat his works, in some degree at least; but this is not accomplished by simply closing the eyes and repeating a formula presented by Mrs. Eddy until one is hypnotized into an ecstatic condition. On page 452 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "Expect to heal simply by repeating the author's words, by right talking and wrong acting, and you will be disappointed." And again on page 454 we read: "The superiority of spiritual power over sensuous is the central point of Christian Science. Remember that the letter and mental argument are only human auxiliaries to aid in bringing thought into accord with the spirit of Truth and Love, which heals the sick and the sinner."
