Man's High Destiny
On page 46 of "No and Yes" our revered Leader writes these stirring words: "Man has a noble destiny; and the fullorbed significance of this destiny has dawned on the sickbound and sin-enslaved." At this time many individuals who have read these lines are asking, What is this destiny; am I participating in it? The ancient Greeks believed in three so-called destinies which supposedly swayed the lives of men. They were known as the Fates,—Clotho the spinner, Lachesis the disposer of lots, and Atropos the inevitable. From the uninstructed human standpoint destiny means fate or doom. Not knowing or not caring about the matter, the average mortal makes good fortune his choice, but carelessly accepts sin, sickness, and death as his destiny. With the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, to guide him, the Christian Scientist banishes from his thought all material philosophy and appropriates the spiritual point of view of Christ Jesus and his apostles.
That valiant apostle Paul states clearly and unmistakably the true and only destiny of man, as recorded in Romans: "For whom he [God] did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son." To be conformed to the image of the Son of God is therefore the only destiny of mankind, and Christian Science is the divine agency through which this desirable conformity is being accomplished. In Christian Science we discover what constitutes man as the image and likeness of God, and this correct and practical instruction enables us to rid ourselves of false beliefs, fears, and doubts in respect to our happiness and our destiny. As man coexists with the perfect Mind, Life, Truth, and Love, and reflects God, he necessarily partakes of the divine nature.
Since the "great First Cause" is perfect and indestructible, man as its likeness or effect must likewise be perfect and indestructible. Since God is perfect divine Love, the real man must be perfectly loving or express perfect loveliness. Since God is perfect Mind, the real man must express perfect mentality. Since God is perfect Truth, the real man must be perfectly truthful, or express perfect truthfulness. These scientific and absolutely logical deductions may be carried through all the synonymous terms for God. There is no corporeality involved in this line of reasoning. It is a thing of consciousness, and it is the absolute truth about God and man. The practical benefit that can be derived from this understanding has been proved by thousands of people in the healing of sickness, sin, and death, as well as by growth in grace and by increased service to the world and to mankind.
