When the Science of Christianity was brought to my attention...
When the Science of Christianity was brought to my attention seven years ago, I had undergone two surgical operations and was then suffering from a nervous trouble as well as from stomach, intestinal, and liver derangement of thirteen years' standing. I consulted many physicians and took medicine continually, until finally the doctors as a last resource sent me to French Lick Springs in Indiana. When the waters there failed to effect a cure, I was told nothing more could be done, so became reconciled to the condition as permanent.
Several years later a kind acquaintance spoke to me of Christian Science. The religious aspect of this teaching did not appeal to me, but as the lady was very earnest and everything else had been tried, I consented to have treatment. I told the practitioner, however, that my condition would be worse if medicine was not taken, and that I did not believe a cure possible. After two weeks of daily treatment there was not the slightest improvement, but at the end of the third week I was greatly surprised to find myself well. Six months later I had occasion to obtain insurance and passed an examination for a twenty year term in two companies.
Deep as is my gratitude for the physical restoration, it almost sinks into insignificance beside the relief from other harassing conditions in my life at that time. For three years I had been separated from my husband, owing to his irresponsibility through an ungovernable and so-called inherited appetite for liquor. He was also a physical wreck, given up by physicians, and having lost every dollar in business, had reached an extremity which proved to be "God's opportunity." He lost all desire for alcohol in three treatments, but the physical healing was very slow, covering practically two years under almost constant treatment. During that time his condition appeared to grow desperate, and we punished ourselves with many doubts and fears. Today, however, he is well, happy, and useful, through his knowledge of Chris tian Science, which, when honestly and persistently applied, meets all needs.
