In the spring of 1914 I had three hemorrhages from the lungs. The final one did not come until the middle of August, at which time work had to be given up. The first day of September found me in a hospital for an operation, and the operating surgeon informed my wife that I would never be able to return to my work. A month later, however, I returned to duty for three days, and as I was preparing to take more leave, the head of our bureau told me that if another breakdown occurred, or even a slight fever, I would have to leave Washington. There was a place to send me, which was Fort Staunton, N. Mex., but my wife and baby could not go too, and it caused me a lot of worry to think of leaving them when our home had been so happy.
A friend then told me of the Christian Science Wednesday evening meeting and I agreed to go with him out of curiosity. The service impressed me so much, however, that I asked him to take me to a Christian Science practitioner, and he did so within a day or two. I told her that I had laughed at Mrs. Eddy and what Christian Science could do, but knew nothing about this teaching. From that day, Dec. 8, 1914, I have been a different man. The severe pain has left me entirely, and my appetite is good all the time. The craving for cigars also left me within a few days, and I have no desire to smoke. Never before did I know anything of God and all that He has power to do. Mrs. Eddy's teachings have taught me to trust in God, knowing that He is Life, Truth, and Love, and that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494).
I give this testimony with the hope that some one who thinks he has an incurable disease will know that there is a cure for every ailment. If we believe that God is, then we must acknowledge that man is made in His likeness. William E. McConnell, Washington, D. C.
