Protective Prayer

Recently there came to the writer a very practical illustration of how through prayer as taught in Christian Science the "whole armor of God" may not only be put on for ourselves, but the immediate objects of our thoughts may also be protected. Our Leader has clearly expressed this in our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where we read (p. 192), "Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power."

The writer was away in an adjacent town, and as an only daughter was alone at home, her mother felt there was need for protection and asked that treatment in Christian Science might be given her. After this had been done there was a certain feeling that "all the fiery darts of the wicked" had been quenched. On arriving home in the evening we learned that a man had called, and under the pretense of asking help for a young cripple, had quite disarmed suspicion and obtained an entrance. Our daughter had no sense of doubt or fear, and when the usual hint was given that money was needed to get to another town, she expressed her regret at not being able to accede to the request. She was then asked to telephone to some other person, and she did so, leaving the man in the hall in the mean time. The man then left without causing the slightest trouble or touching anything.

Immediately upon hearing of this incident the writer recognized the man as a bad character who had been around some months before with the same intention of preying upon Christian Scientists and concerning whom a warning had been sent to other fields. It would be impossible to express the deep gratitude to God for Mrs. Eddy's teaching which was called forth by this incident, in the hearts of the parents, and also of the child when she was informed of the wonderful protection that had been vouchsafed both to her and to the home. Christian Scientists are often reminded of this promise in the ninety-first psalm: "There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling."
