The Lectures

The remarks of Albert F. Gilmore in introducing Prof. Hermann S. Hering at the lecture given in Aeolian Hall for Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, were as follows:—

One often hears wonder expressed that Christian Scientists are so faithful in their attendance upon the Sunday services, the Wednesday evening meetings, the lectures, and various other activities of this movement; and it may not be amiss if we consider for a moment what are some of the reasons for this devotion.

Incident upon the understanding of what God is, His goodness and His allness, of what man is, and of the eternal and indestructible relation of God to man, the destruction of evil in its manifold forms is so complete that Christian Scientists have come to exclaim with the prophet of old, "Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?" For Christian Scientists have come to know that with a knowledge of Truth they are able literally to break every band of wickedness with which mortal man has embound himself by his belief in the reality of sin; to undo every burden, however heavy it may be, which he has imposed upon himself; to let the oppressed go free from every form of slavery and bondage; to break the yoke of every limitation which he has set for himself; in short, that an understanding of Truth enables one to heal every form of sickness, to comfort the sorrowing, to bind up the broken-hearted, and to reform the sinner.
