Civilization and Brotherhood
In these times when the temptation to share the world's belief in strife and its attendant terrors is seemingly insistent, Christian Scientists are clinging to the knowledge that peace is the only true state of the universe and man, and they are doing this in a way they perhaps never did before when the world was, outwardly at least, more peaceful. They do know and are availing themselves of the fact stated in the first chapter of Genesis: "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." They thence deduce the inevitable conclusion that God never made any element which could hate, oppose, or destroy.
While these healing truths are daily comforting all who accept them, it is useful to remember that discord, arising from the animal beliefs of mortal mind, is by no means a new phase of the illusion of this so-called material intelligence, but must be regarded as an integral part of the whole false claim of a mind separate from God. It is only in the ratio that Christian Science uncovers and destroys the belief of animal magnetism as being cause, creator, or effect, that the world will awake from its dream of life where no life exists, and rise to the perception and acceptance of that mental state which can best be described as "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding."
This train of thought was accentuated by a little incident which I saw one day. I was walking through a short though not particularly attractive cut to my house, when I noticed a very small boy break away from the man he was walking with and rush up to an even smaller boy standing a few yards from him and hit the child hard across the face with a stick which he was carrying. The poor little fellow, very much taken aback for a moment by this violent assault, gave a cry, but pulling himself together he tried to hit back at his savage assailant with his fist. The man just glanced around and called roughly to the first child to come along, and the boy did then the two went on, as it seemed they were merely passing this way at the time.
