[Written for the Sentinel]

Truth the Victor

Not in this war
Shall ye with fierce, embattled foes contend,
Nor spear nor breastplate use to pierce or fend.
Your glittering sword shall know no bloody play,
Your shining armor shall undented stay,
No vicious thrust shall helm or harness mar;
Ye shall not fight today.

Not now, nor nigh,
Nor e'er again, upon the ensanguined field
Shall ye your life-blood to the foeman yield;
Not in this mortal battle shall ye fight.
'Tis not by human power, by earthly might,
"But by my spirit," saith the Lord Most High,
And He doth guard the right.

Truth, Love alone,
Whose banners, streaming ceaselessly abroad,
Wage silent battle for the child of God,
Driving our foes before us, one by one,
As morning mist is scattered by the sun;
The battle and the victory are His own,
And He the field hath won.
