Among the Churches

Current Notes

Portland and Salem, Ore. — For the past three years the Christian Science organizations of Portland and Salem have been holding services in the various penal and public institutions in this community. At the Multnomah County Poor Farm services are held every sixth Sunday, at the Multnomah County Jail every two weeks, and at the State Penitentiary in Salem on the third Sunday of each month. The attendance at all the institutions is marked by the close attention given to the services.

In October, 1915, a lecture was given in the State Penitentiary at Salem by Clarence C. Eaton. It was attended by five hundred inmates, and close attention was given by all. A short time ago cards were distributed among the men, asking them if interested in the study of Christian Science and wishing to have the literature sent direct to them to return the card with name signed. The committee in charge received one hundred and twenty-eight cards, which is 25 per cent of the inmates. Many requests for treatment have been received from the men at various times, and quite a number have their own copy of Science and Health.

The officers in charge at both the county and state institutions are very friendly and give us all the assistance they can. The growth in the work is marked. There have been many testimonies given by the men at various times, and they look forward with pleasure to the dates when the services are to be held. The order of service followed is along the line of the Wednesday evening meeting, giving an opportunity for testimonies.—Correspondence.
