In 1904 I became afflicted with catarrh
In 1904 I became afflicted with catarrh. After having treatment from four of our local physicians without relief, I went to a specialist in another town, who succeeded in relieving the discharge; but I was left quite deaf, and with a continuous roaring sound in my ear that at times was almost unbearable. I then consulted a specialist in a town fortyfive miles away, making weekly trips for treatment. Obtaining no relief, I tried other methods of treatment, but all without result. In February, 1906, I went to Minneapolis, where I was treated for seven weeks by one of the best specialists in the West. He tried everything that medical science could suggest and gave up the case as incurable, saying that an operation might stop the noise, but that I would always be deaf. I came home discouraged and gave up consulting doctors.
From August, 1906, till about the same time in 1907, members of my family were ill continually, so that I became very nervous and my general health much impaired. This condition aggravated the deafness and noises in the head, until it seemed as if I would rather die than live. The first of October, 1907, I went to Boston, stopping in the home of a gentleman who had become a Christian Scientist through his own remarkable healing. At that time I had heard of some of the healings Christian Science had accomplished, though I knew nothing of its teachings and gave the subject little thought or credence. One day, however, I told this gentleman that if he or Christian Science could do anything for my head, I wished he would do it. He said he would gladly try to help me, although he advised me to go to a regular practitioner, as he was only a beginner; but I preferred his treatment. I retired that night feeling rather disappointed that he did not keep me up and pray over me, or do something, I hardly knew what; but I slept peacefully all night and awoke the following morning well. The noises have never returned and my hearing is normal. I feel that I am completely cured of the trouble.
In August, 1912, I was in Minneapolis again, and at the request of my brother called on the specialist who had treated me, requesting an examination. He pronounced the ear normal. He also said that he remembered my case perfectly, and asked who cured me. When I told him, he only remarked, "I have known of the Christian Scientists doing some very remarkable things." Since this healing I have used no material remedies and have tried to order my life by the teachings of Christian Science.—C. L. M. Bugbee, Newport, Vt.
