If our critic, the evangelist, will read the Christian Science...

If our critic, the evangelist, will read the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, or any of the Christian Science periodicals, he will not find from cover to cover in any of them a single unkind remark about the Baptists or any other religious denomination. The Scientist has so much of the truth; he loves it so well, and it means so much to him, that he does not need to go beyond its borders to find something to talk about. In fact it has no "borders," for being of God it is unbounded, infinite, beautiful, healing, and saving.

One of our greatest and most respected literary men, Hamilton W. Mabie, says, "Most of our criticism of others is either idle or unjust, because it does not take into account the obstacles overcome and the progress accomplished." The greatest opposition and the most unjust criticism Christian Science has met with have come from the clergy. History is repeating itself, since it was the same class of men who opposed and persecuted Christ Jesus. He could heal as well as preach; they could not. He understood truth; they merely believed it. He taught, "By their fruits ye shall know them." This is true of those who demonstrate truth as well as of those who merely talk about it; who urge others to shoulder burdens which they themselves will not touch with one of their own fingers, as Jesus said. He commanded his followers not only to preach the gospel but to heal the sick.
