The hundreds of thousands of people who constitute the...
Dayton (Ohio) Herald
The hundreds of thousands of people who constitute the rank and file of the Christian Science movement had given the laws of hygiene and materia medica a fair trial before turning to Christian Science; many of this number had been pronounced incurable by physicians. Strict observance of the so-called laws of health failed to heal them, but the understanding of God's law and how to apply it to the destruction of both sin and disease, restored them to health. The Church of Christ, Scientist, is built upon the healing of the sick and reformation of the sinner through the gospel of Jesus Christ, as understood in Christian Science. There are now more than twelve hundred churches of this faith throughout the world, and each year witnesses a greater growth. The honest seeker after truth need not go outside the city of Dayton to find many people who have been healed through Christian Science.
The admonition of Christ Jesus to heal the sick is no more binding upon Christian Scientists than upon Christians of other denominations. It can be said of Christian Scientists that they are striving to obey the commands of the divine Exemplar, although they do not claim to bring out the perfect demonstration of Jesus' teachings at this period. Christian Scientists do not boast of being better than other professed Christians, but they do claim that Christian Science has made them better men and better women than they were before knowing of Christian Science, even though many of them came from evangelical churches. The teaching of Christian Science has increased their faith in God and love for the inspired word of the Bible; it has awakened a greater desire to follow in the footsteps of their Master. Jesus said, "Every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.... By their fruits ye shall know them." The disciples who lived and practised Jesus' teachings left the best record of his life and works. Those who live and practise the teachings of Christian Science are best able to judge as to whether its teachings are Christian and scientific.
