A short while after my marriage (more than forty years ago) I found myself a sick woman. I could never nurse my children, and I did not improve as years passed by; indeed, new diseases were added, and I became a helpless and a hopeless sufferer. I had bladder and female trouble, also dropsy. At last I took my bed, with no outlook but sorrow and suffering. My only daughter was then married and away from me, so that my husband and sons had to do for themselves and me, and our home was truly a sad one.
I had heard that a lady some distance from me had been healed by Christian Science, and the practitioner was not far away, so my son said he would go for her if I was willing. This was five years ago. I can never forget that Saturday evening in November. She arrived at sunset, and sat by me and talked as I had never before heard any one talk. She told me about a God who is Love, who sent no evil upon me or any one. I sat up in bed and said, "That is the kind of God I want; but is it true? I was taught that God sent these ills upon me. Oh, how happy I am!"
The next morning I was up and about my household duties. In a few hours, the table where stood my bottles of medicine, had the Bible and Science and Health, which I bought at once. The next day the water began to ooze through the pores of my skin, so that I sat with cloths around my body, which were changed every few moments, but after a little while this stopped. A few days later I rode fourteen miles to see my daughter and to show her what God had done for me. I went to my old church again. My pastor saw me, and after service he came down the aisle to meet me. I told him that God had healed me. He knew I had sent for a Christian Science healer, and he said, "Well, sister, praise the bridge that carried you over." I could not be still; I had to speak out my joy. Some said I talked too much, but I could not help it.
