One hundred and twenty million dollars was filched from the American people during the last fiscal year by swindlers who operated largely through the United States mails, according to a formal report to Postmaster-General Hitchcock. This was an increase of approximately fifty million dollars in the aggregate of the previous year. Of those who are alleged to have operated the fraudulent schemes, one thousand and sixty-three were arrested by post-office inspectors. They included persons in all walks of life. During the year which ended June 30 last, four hundred and fifty-two persons were convicted and sentenced, and five hundred and seventy-one cases are awaiting final disposition. The report says that these fraud manipulators, who usually exploit bogus mines, fake remedies, and worthless lands, constitute a distinct class of law-breakers.

Not less than five separate reports will be embraced in the Stanley steel trust investigating committee's statement to the House as a result of its investigation of the affairs and operations of the United States Steel Corporation. The Democratic majority will file two reports. Three will come from the Republican members.
