"Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy,...

St. Leonards Observer

"Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the text-book of Christian Science, takes as its fundamental proposition the omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience of God, as taught by Jesus the Christ, who working from this very basis healed the sick and the sinning more successfully and more certainly than any method of healing that has ever yet been, or ever will be, presented to mankind. The Master not only practised this truth-healing himself, but taught his followers how to do the same, and accompanied his teachings with the promise that "he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."

Now Christian Scientists, while accepting with other Christian people the fact of Christian healing, have, however, been taught that the healings performed by Jesus were in accordance with a law of God which is today as applicable to human needs as it was nineteen hundred years ago. They further recognize that any method demonstrated by Jesus and recommended by him to his followers must have been a strictly scientific method in the truest sense of that word, that which is based upon a correct apprehension of God the creator and His creation. Jesus himself said, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." It was the teaching and demonstration of this statement that formed the basis of Jesus' mission, in the performance of which he suffered for mankind and finally triumphed, demonstrating the truth of all his contentions. The aim, then, of every Christian Scientist is to gain and apply this true knowledge of the creator and His creation, for in this knowledge they believe that there is to be found that dominion over sin, sickness, and death which will result in their absolute extinction, and which, when realized, constitutes eternal life as promised by Christ Jesus.

Christian Science is daily giving evidence of its right basis, in the numberless cases of healing which even its critics are bound to admit, yet Christian Scientists would not for one moment claim that they have attained to that degree of understanding, the absolute gain of which will destroy all sorrow and suffering; nevertheless, they "press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus," and in so doing they recognize something that the world has not yet perceived, that in order to progress along the line of true scientific knowledge, it is profitless to continue the search by delving into that which pertains to the material, but rather must they concentrate all their efforts in the direction that leads to a clearer perception of spiritual cause and effect, to a deeper knowledge of that "law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" which Paul declared has made us "free from the law of sin and death."-
