[Written for the Sentinel.]

OMNIPOTENCE

Thou mayest not, perchance, a mount remove,
Or change the crystal water into wine,—
The dead restore, or heal through power divine
The multitude that seek this power to prove:
Yet think ye not such marvelous works behoove
A favored mortal or predestined line;
Nor, scoffing, give no credence till a sign
Thy faith awaken and thy doubt reprove.

Thine eyes, by Science taught, may Truth discern,
And scorn each claim of matter; not thy might
Shall triumph, but thy heart, a-humbled, learn
The mighty power of Mind that in thy sight
Shall error's towering mountain overturn,
And chase the blinding darkness with its light.
