People who are trying to economize are to be shown how to save fifty million dollars a year when the report of the marketing committee of the New York state food investigating commission is out next month, according to a prediction made by the counsel for the committee.
To
the casual inquirer Christian Scientists must at times seem contradictory in their statements; for instance, when a stranger attends a Wednesday evening service and hears clear and impressive testimonies of healing, and then, perhaps next day, is told by a friend of "so and so" who "tried Christian Science" and it "did not do him a bit of good.
Some weeks ago comment was permitted in your paper on an attack on Christian Science which appeared in an inter-denominational religious monthly," reproduced locally for Australian circulation.
In answer to our critic, in his recent sermon, it should be understood that Christian Scientists do not entice any one from the churches; those who come from the churches have proved the truth in Christian Science for themselves, in the healing of moral or physical infirmities, and a large percentage of these have been healed after all other means had failed.
Your writer has been kind enough to concede some virtue to Christian Science, at the same time disclaiming for it so much as a "sisterhood with science.
Christian Science recognizes that all power, all knowledge, all presence, all action, is vested in God, Spirit, and that therefore the real universe which He created is spiritual, perfect, and harmonious.
Thou
mayest not, perchance, a mount remove,Or change the crystal water into wine,—The dead restore, or heal through power divineThe multitude that seek this power to prove:Yet think ye not such marvelous works behooveA favored mortal or predestined line;Nor, scoffing, give no credence till a signThy faith awaken and thy doubt reprove.
Frequently
at the Wednesday evening meetings we hear testimonies given in which the speaker includes a statement of his gratitude for the greater prosperity which he is enjoying in his business affairs, and to a stranger who is attending a Christian Science service for the first time, this statement may prove somewhat puzzling.
There
are few men, and none of parts, who do not erect and dream over their castles in Spain, who have not outlined an ideal of earthly circumstance and surroundings with which they associate the thought of happiness and satisfaction; and the difficulty of many a task, the weight of many a burden, has been temporarily lessened by this ministry of hope, the promise it gives of a sometimes success.
All
thoughtful people discover sooner or later that selfdenial in its broadest sense must be practised, if real and lasting progress is to be made in any direction, and some Christians have carried this form of self-discipline to great length, so far as outward indulgences are concerned, who clearly have not understood the Master's teaching on this subject.
Ground is being broken today [March 27] on the southeast corner of Bailey street and Washington avenue for the site of a handsome church building which, when completed, will cost fully five thousand dollars unfurnished.
So many times I have been helped and encouraged by the testimonies in the Sentinel that it has occurred to me I, too, might in this way be the means of helping some one else.
I have been healed in Christian Science of eye, nose, ear, and throat trouble, which I had after a relapse in a case of fever when I was seven or eight years old.
I have just been reading the Sentinel, stored with its treasures of good news from thankful hearts, that are unable to utter all that they know and feel; and how can I tell of the many blessings which have come to me through Christian Science?
For a long time I have felt that I must in some way express my great debt of gratitude for Christian Science, and I know no better way to do so than to give an account through the Sentinel of some of the many blessings I have received.
