People who are trying to economize are to be shown how to save fifty million dollars a year when the report of the marketing committee of the New York state food investigating commission is out next month, according to a prediction made by the counsel for the committee. Distribution methods play an important part in the commission's plans for effecting a saving. "It is an anachronism," said he, "for New York city to continue the present haphazard and archaic methods of food distribution. Green vegetables have been occupying a great deal of our attention lately, and we find that of the consumer's dollar thirty cents goes to the producer, eight cents to the railroads, and sixty-two cents to defray the expenses of distribution within the city and to accumulate profits for from three to eight persons who handle the produce."
The city council gas, oil, and electric light committee of Chicago has recommended for passage an ordinance which is intended to prevent damage by electrolysis. If passed, the traction companies will be compelled to equip their lines with what is called a negative "booster." The city electrician, who drew up the measure, presented figures showing that the estimated cost would be three million dollars. Traction representatives who were present said that if the ordinance passed, the companies would have to go into bankruptcy, the cost having been figured by them at twenty million dollars.
The New York Telephone Company has been ordered by the public service commission to discontinue the use of the word "telegram" as a call word for the Western Union or any other telegraph company in the state. The telephone company is directed to assign to the Postal Telegraph-Cable Company and the Western Union call numbers, as is usual with other subscribers, and in addition that the word "Postal" be assigned as a call word for the Postal company and "Western Union" for the Western Union company.
