I came to Christian Science for something with which to...

I came to Christian Science for something with which to sustain my life. I had spent twelve years in seeking help from climate, travel, and mineral springs, on account of throat and lung trouble. My voice was so impaired at times that I had no means of communication except by signs or writing. While these conditions grew somewhat better at times, other complications set in, until at length the physician pronounced my case paralysis of stomach and bowels.

Having spent most of the time at Colorado Springs, the physician thought that I had better go to a lower altitude, which I did. In a few months, however, I grew worse, and the physician there said the altitude was too low and the sun too hot. It being the first of June, I went to noted mineral springs in the mountains and stayed two months; then I returned to Colorado Springs greatly discouraged. My former physician said I need not expect to live much longer, as every kind of medicine had been used for me that was known to medical history; that the only thing I could do was to stay in the mountains during the summer, and perhaps I might live six months.

I said I would like to go to the place which he had recommended to me six months before, it being my sister's home. I was very weak, but thought that if I could go there and rest I might get better again. The physician said in reply that if I went there then I would not live six weeks. It was truly "man's extremity," and it became "God's opportunity." One who had been healed a few months before, heard of my troubles and wrote, asking me if I did not want to try Christian Science. I said I was willing to try anything that offered to sustain life, but that I did not know about Christian Science. She sent me the address of a practitioner, whose help I was not long in securing. I told her my troubles and how I longed to go to my sister's home, also how the physician had warned me of the danger of going there in the summer-time, it being then the first of August. In reply she said that God was my life and that the sun could not kill me. The fifth day I went there, and this truth came to me, that man made in the image and likeness of God cannot be sick or die. It was with me for many weeks and met every need. I was healed in three weeks' treatment, and I could eat anything that others ate and do anything that came to me to do.
