I have recently passed through an experience which has shown me anew the power of Truth and Love. On the twenty-first of April, 1910, I started downstairs with both arms full of books, and on the second step I lost my balance and fell to the bottom of the uncarpeted stairs. My two sons heard the fall and reached me almost as I landed, one of them repeating the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). I was not unconscious, and as they lifted me I declared the truth of being. One ankle seemed to be seriously injured, so we telephoned for help in Science, also for a physician, who came and put the foot into a cast. He said the minimum time at which I could remove the cast and stand would be five weeks. This prediction and the picture he drew of the condition of the ankle, and the danger of using it too soon, planted additional fear in our thoughts.

Being the only Scientists in the immediate vicinity, I felt there would be much curiosity as well as sympathy and interest to know what Science could do. It so happened that I had been placed in the dining-room on a couch, so I saw every one who came to call. Before the physician left, two came in to talk over Science matters, and during the day there were fourteen callers, but there was no fever, nervousness, pain, nor depression. Joy and peace radiated from all, a sure evidence of a greater than human love watching over us. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 134) I found a pearl of thought which was constantly recurring to me: "He who dwelleth in eternal light is bigger than the shadow, and will guard and guide His own." I was dressed every day but the first two; we had service each Sunday, as we have had for two years, some one else reading for me.

The day before the third week, I felt I could remove the cast. I was alone, except for a little maid, who brought me a pan of water. I removed the cast, bathed my foot, put it on a pillow and covered it up. When I opened Science and Health to find help to banish a sense of fear and weakness, I found a notation of page 390:4, to 6 next page. I read and reread it, and found strength and peace. Each day I took off the cast while I did my reading, replacing it at night. The fifth day of this treatment we called in the physician to remove officially the cast. He was greatly pleased at the healing and said that in a week I could stand, and in two I could walk.
