[Written for the Sentinel.]

GRATITUDE

I Saw the beauty of the sunrise fall
Upon a foam of blossoms red and white,
Stirring with nested birds whose little call
Of eager life gave exquisite delight,
And marveled at the heart of God! He knows
Love lies behind the flaming of the rose!

Perfume and color, and that most divine
And breathless holiness which morning brings,
Sank in my spirit till their peace was mine
And one with scent of leaves and stir of wings.
I felt the universe sublimely still,
Rounded in God's most pure and radiant will.
