THE LECTURES

Bicknell Young lectured on Christian Science at the Queen's Rooms, Feb. 13. The remarks by the chairman, A. H. Pettigrew, Esq., in introducing the lecturer, were in part as follows,—

These lectures on Christian Science are given for the purpose of endeavoring to leaven the thought of the community with a more accurate knowledge of Christian Science, and to offer testimony to facts regarding the life and work of its Discoverer and Founder, the Rev. Mary Baker Eddy. Now I wish to say that, so far as I myself am concerned, I am not a Christian Scientist. I am here, however, to listen, to learn, and I hope to profit. I am sure that if every man and woman here tonight has come with the same open mind, with the same receptive heart, I know sufficient about Christian Science to prophesy that they will go away much benefited.

I would like to say that the first time I came in contact with Christian Science was about four years ago. My attention was drawn to an extraordinary change that had taken place in a dear friend of ours. My wife and I, without collusion of thought, without comparison of impression, agreed that something wonderful had happened to her. While the same woman outwardly and visibly (except that her physical appearance had vastly improved), I should have said that mentally and spiritually she was a changed woman. A joy in living had evidently come to her; and we wanted to know the reason why. And I may tell you in a word that it turned out to be that she had been brought into close personal touch with Christian Science and had become a Scientist. This is not the only instance. I have met very many since then who to my personal knowledge have benefited not only in body,—for that is the last thing I should say even a Christian Scientist should seek,—but in heart and mind; and I make this confession, although as I said at the beginning I cannot claim to be a Christian Scientist, that I am ready to confess gratefully that I also have benefited from the little study I have been able to give to it.
