THE HEALING TOUCH
We are told that the common people heard the Master gladly, and when we remember the size of the audiences he addressed, the long distances which the many must have come to hear him, and the frequency with which they followed him from place to place that they might garner all his marvelous sayings,—the ease with which he reached the people becomes apparent, and we are brought face to face with the inescapable inference that, preached in its purity and power, the gospel must ever be irresistibly winsome.
In this twentieth century, however, it will be conceded that one of the most serious problems for the average minister is that of gaining the ear and holding the attention of those whom he would bless. Many a church bulletin today appeals largely to the world's love of entertainment, and with the ever-increasing complexities and distractions of modern life, this matter of securing a hearing for religious appeal seems to be growing no less difficult than vital. Happily for all mankind, Christian Science has come to make it clear that, when spoken in demonstration of its verity and healing power, the gospel will command attention today even as it did in the first century, and for the reason that it answers satisfyingly to the "heart's great need."
Science greatly broadens one's perception, and brings escape from the bondage of man-made castes and creeds. It consequently begins at once to lessen the impulse to judge men without considering the hereditary predisposition and educational bias of mortal belief, and it thus implants and nourishes that more kindly and compassionate regard for one's fellow men which they so quickly recognize and to which they so gladly respond. Love is now "reflected in love" (Science and Health, p. 17) and the fulfilment of the Saviour's prayer "that they may be one" is brought nigh. The joy of this active sense of brotherhood becomes an abiding possession, and we extend the hand of fellowship with a heartiness and spontaneity we had never known before.
