In the summer of 1904, when in great need of help, everything possible having been done for me, materially, that could be done, during years of wretchedness, I decided to try Christian Science. I had not much faith in it, but wrote and asked a dear relative, who had been healed in Christian Science, to treat me for throat and lung trouble. My mother had passed on with this form of disease when I was only three years old; later a sister, just two years previous to this a dear brother, and now it seemed that my time was near. From the first treatment in Christian Science, however, I began to improve. I had been so weak that at times I could not speak, could hardly walk a block, and could not get out in the night air without coughing continually. People have told me since then that they thought I would not be here much longer.
I took absent treatment for a few weeks, then the practitioner came to my house and stayed with me about a week. We then went to St. Louis to attend the World's Fair, and while there I attended my first Christian Science service at First Church. This was on Wednesday evening, and I went again on Sunday. I cannot describe how wonderful it all was to me to see Love reflected in so many bright faces. I thought the testimonies that were given on Wednesday night were wonderful. I had never seen any of the people before, but they did not seem like strangers to me.
My healing might be called slow, but I can truly say that these seven years have been the happiest of my life. I have had the pleasure of attending services in Memphis and Nashville several times, but have never lived where there were many Scientists. When I was healed I lived in Paragould, Ark., and was the first who was healed there so far as I know. I have one daughter in Science. We were received as members of The Mother Church at the same time, and others of my family have been greatly benefited.
