Los Angeles (Cal.) Clarion
If there is any one place where the practical, helpful influence of Christian Science is needed it is in the busy "marts of trade." We are all more or less familiar with what are termed "trade conditions," and with the powerful influence of fear which from a multitude of causes will arise and paralyze the channels of business activity. Men are coming to recognize the fact that these are unnecessary things, and when the danger has passed often remark that it was all unnecessary. Christian Science brings to this condition of fear, with all the envy and self-seeking that go with it, a positive and practical remedy—the "perfect love" that "casteth out fear."
The man or woman who makes Christian Science the key-stone of his life, soon realizes that his first concern is to obey the "first and great commandment," and the second which "is like unto it." Those who fulfil the commands of the Master to seek "first the kingdom of God," soon find that the other things are relegated to their proper place. "Love for God and man," Mrs. Eddy writes on page 454 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "is the true incentive in both healing and teaching. Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way. Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action." The Christian Scientist who is thus purifying his thought of fear and belief in evil, soon has these untoward conditions supplanted by confidence and trust. Instead of the demands of self-interest he finds and readily obeys the demands of the "golden rule." By making it his chief concern to see that he is obeying the demands of God in every detail of his work, he soon seeks the path that brings the greatest good to the greatest number. He begins to see whether or not he is serving his employer as he would like to be served; to study whether he is sparing his competitor the things he would like to be spared; in fine, to see whether he is proving that he is loving his neighbor as himself. The Christian Scientist sees and appreciates that this loving spirit of helpfulness—the spirit of the Master—is what the business world greatly needs.
