Christian Science is based upon the Scriptural teachings...
Townsville (Queensland, Australia) Star
Christian Science is based upon the Scriptural teachings concerning the omnipotence and the "All-in-all" of God. "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." The major premise of the Christian Science syllogism is the Master's declaration, "God is Spirit" (Rev. Ver.); and every statement contained in the Christian Science text-book is consistently deduced from this premise. Thus it may be noted that the teaching is Christian; and since the Master's teaching is true and therefore scientific, we may note the propriety of the name Christian Science. You say the adherents of Christian Science are often "highly respected and intelligent men." Since men who have deported themselves in such a manner as to become highly respected have demonstrated their excellent judgment, would it not be well to heed the fact that so many intelligent men have accepted Christian Science, and take this as an evidence that Christian Science is a good thing? In any event, the multitudes who have accepted this religion, after having made a thorough investigation of the teaching and having thoroughtly tested its efficacy, have continued in their adherence, and this is strong evidence of the intelligibility and the usefulness of Christian Science.
It is the omnipotence and omnipresence of divine Love which destroys sin and disease in Christian Science; and it is this fact which marks the distinction between Christian Science and the exercise of the human will which is called hypnotism or mental suggestion. Christian Science plants itself unreservedly upon the Scriptural teaching concerning God and His creation. It endorses the teaching that God is good, and that He made all that was made, "and, behold, it was very good." It endorses the teaching, "Yea, let God be true, but every man a liar;" that is, let Spirit, God, constitute the basis of all truth, even though it shall make everything else a lie. Christian Science does not teach that disease and evil are not real to erring human existence, but that they have no divine standing, simply a relative existence which can be destroyed by Truth.
