The pamphlet attacking Christian Science, as noticed in...

Brighton (Eng.) Gazette

The pamphlet attacking Christian Science, as noticed in a recent issue, contains apparently serious accusations to any one unacquainted with the teachings of Christian Science. But does our critic really think that the hundreds of thousands of intelligent men and women who accept the teachings of Christian Science, have done so on the frail and silly basis that he attributes to them? Is it not more likely that our critic has himself failed to perceive that which has attracted so many others? It would appear so, after one has read the little pamphlet comprising his three sermons, literally filled with false charges, misrepresentations, and misconceptions of Christian Science. Of course, when our critic speaks of Christian Science as a heresy, it is well to remember that past history teaches us that the heresy of today is often the accepted belief of tomorrow; and even at this hour a Church of England minister is not free from the charge of heresy in the eyes of those who do not hold the same view with regard to Bible teachings as he does.

At the end of this pamphlet there is, I see, an account of an inquest held upon a certain lady, whose case was pronounced hopeless by the medical fraternity, who died though she had received help from a Christian Science practitioner. Does the public realize, I wonder, that never a case dies under Christian Science treatment, but that it is immediately brought into the coroner's court? When one considers the admittedly large number who are turning to Christian Science for physical relief, of which a very considerable percentage are cases previously given up as hopeless by the doctors, is it not a wonderful testimony to the success of Christian Science methods that there are so few inquests? For forty years Christian Science has been criticized and condemned; but the world is changing its views, and many who in the past have failed to consider the subject from an unprejudiced standpoint are now awaking to receive gladly the message that Mrs. Eddy has delivered to this age.

It is, of course, impossible to attempt any detailed reply to the clergyman's pamphlet in the space that a letter permits. Any who desire to study the subject, however, should go for information to the text-book itself ("Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy), rather than lean upon the doubtful statements contained in pamphlets and books, written from various motives, all with the object of discrediting Christian Science and Christian Scientists.
